A defence customer needed to replace failing 17” ruggedised monitors with specific requirements, and Touchpoint solved the problem by engaging one of the industry’s preeminent suppliers of ruggedised screen technology and developing a custom run of a previously manufactured model, resulting in the customer sourcing the technology that exactly fit their environment, minimising the time and cost of documenting and gaining approval for the engineering change, and providing spares for future sustainment.
Customer Challenge:
Department of Defence had a unique requirement to replace failing 17” ruggedised monitors on one of their naval platforms. The screens needed to satisfy several key criteria including native 4:3 aspect ratio, VESA mount (100mm x 100mm) and VGA input. Any other shape/aspect ratio would obscure existing equipment surrounding the mounting point of the device.
Touchpoint Solution:
Touchpoint quickly conducted the required research to confirm that no currently available off-the-shelf product was available that satisfied all key criteria. Taking an alternative approach we engaged one of the industry’s preeminent suppliers of ruggedised screen technology. It was quickly determined that the previously manufactured model was still the optimal solution so a business case was developed to do a custom production run of this previous design.
Key Outcomes:
This approach enabled the customer to source the technology that exactly fitted their environment and, as the equipment was built to an existing specification, minimised the time and cost of documenting and gaining approval for an engineering change. Lead time for manufacture and delivery to site was just 8 weeks. In addition an analysis of MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) was conducted to determine the required number of spares to ensure that future sustainment was also catered for.
