The age of Big Data is here and businesses of all sizes are facing the dual challenges of storing more data than ever before whilst providing data access speeds that satisfy the ever increasing demands of users.

As a result, System Architects are looking to Solid State Drives (SSDs) to help deliver the solutions required. SSDs allow for big increases in performance with access speeds around 100 times faster than regular Hard Disk Drives, they are also more reliable and are smaller in size. In the case of HP, there are now a huge number and variety of SSDs available.

Working with SSDs can be daunting for many customers resulting in two key questions:

How do I know which SSDs to choose?

At last count, according to HP’s latest (March 2016) SSD datasheet, there are now some 160 SSD options available.

HPE SSD Solid State DriveThis wide range includes:

  1. Usage type – Write Intensive (WI), Read Intensive (RI) or Mixed Use (MU)
  2. Form factor – 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch
  3. Speed – 6G SATA, 12G SAS and NVMe
  4. Connection type – Hot Plug, PCIe or M.2
  5. Size – anywhere from 100GB right up to 3.64TB (at time of writing)

As with most IT hardware choices it comes down firstly to available budget and then making a good decision that balances the requirements for usage type, speed and size.

Can I retro-fit SSDs into my existing HP server hardware?

Yes you can. There are options available for most recent HP server models including Gen9, Gen8 and G7 servers.

Here at Touchpoint we’d welcome an opportunity to assist you with selecting the right SSDs for any new servers you’re looking to purchase or with a retro-fit to boost the performance of your existing environment.
