Customer Challenge:
Fin Design & Effects, a rapidly growing VFX studio based in Sydney, has seen a steadily growing load on their existing render infrastructure.
Most recently, they faced the challenge of scaling up their infrastructure significantly to meet growing project demands while managing costs effectively.
Touchpoint Solution:
Fin Design wanted to increase the amount of available on-premises compute capacity without funding the full upgrade via traditional capital expenditure (CapEx).
To deliver this outcome, Touchpoint partnered with Dell to deliver a Dell APEX solution – a relatively new and innovative offering that allows customers to source the infrastructure they need using a consumption-based commercial model that utilises operating expenditure (OpEx) rather than CapEx.
This solution saw deployment of eighteen additional Dell PowerEdge servers, configured and installed to meet Fin’s performance needs. However, the Dell APEX consumption model enables Fin to pay only for the capacity that they use by committing to a base level of system usage and then having the flexibility to temporarily burst above this capacity when a project demands extra performance.
Additionally, hardware consumed under the Dell APEX agreement comes with a built-in discount, enhancing the overall cost-effectiveness of the solution.
Key Outcomes
- Fin Design achieves significant cost savings through the discounted OpEx consumption model provided by Dell APEX. The pay-as-you-go approach enables them to manage expenses more effectively, greatly improving cash flow and P&L impact.
- The new render infrastructure provides the performance needed to handle large-scale projects efficiently, with the option to temporarily boost performance when needed, ensuring that Fin’s fluctuating workload is managed seamlessly.
- At the end of the agreed term, Fin will have the flexibility to extend their APEX agreement, refresh their infrastructure, or purchase the hardware outright, giving them good control over future infrastructure planning.
