Overview

Touchpoint delivered a Dell APEX render infrastructure solution for Fin Design, enabling the studio to scale compute capacity while optimising infrastructure costs and avoiding upfront capital investment.

By leveraging a flexible, consumption-based model, Touchpoint deployed additional rendering capacity aligned to project demand - allowing Fin Design to improve performance, manage fluctuating workloads, and maintain financial control.

Client Context

Fin Design & Effects is a Sydney-based visual effects studio specialising in high-end post-production and rendering for film, television, and commercial projects. As project complexity and volume increase, the demand for high-performance rendering infrastructure continues to grow.

Challenge

Fin Design was experiencing sustained growth, placing increasing pressure on its existing render infrastructure. As project demand scaled, the organisation needed to significantly expand its on‑premises compute capacity to maintain performance and delivery timelines.

However, a traditional infrastructure refresh would require substantial capital investment, creating pressure on cash flow and limiting financial flexibility. At the same time, workload demand was inherently variable, with peak project periods requiring significantly more compute capacity than baseline operations.

Fin Design needed a solution that would:

  • Increase rendering performance
  • Support fluctuating demand
  • Avoid large upfront CapEx commitments

Without a flexible approach, the business risked either under‑provisioning infrastructure or over‑investing in unused capacity.

Approach

Touchpoint worked closely with Fin Design and Dell to identify a solution that aligned infrastructure performance with financial flexibility. Rather than pursuing a traditional capital purchase model, Touchpoint evaluated alternative delivery strategies, including an Infrastructure‑as‑a‑Service (IaaS) approach that would allow Fin Design to scale compute capacity in line with project demand.

This involved assessing how a consumption-based model could support fluctuating workloads while reducing upfront investment and aligning costs more closely with actual usage. Touchpoint guided the customer through both the technical design and commercial structure of a Dell APEX solution, ensuring the approach met performance requirements without introducing financial strain.

By shifting to an IaaS model, Touchpoint enabled a more flexible, scalable infrastructure strategy - balancing performance, cost, and long-term adaptability.

Solution

Touchpoint delivered a Dell APEX consumption-based infrastructure solution, enabling Fin Design to expand compute capacity without a traditional CapEx investment.

The solution included:

  • Deployment of 18 Dell PowerEdge servers
  • Configuration and installation aligned to rendering performance requirements
  • A consumption-based model allowing payment based on usage

Fin Design committed to a baseline level of system usage, with the ability to burst capacity above this level during peak project workloads. This provided the flexibility to scale performance as needed without permanently over-provisioning infrastructure.

The solution also included built-in cost efficiencies through Dell APEX pricing, as well as ongoing support and lifecycle flexibility at the end of the agreement term.

Impact

The solution delivered both operational and financial outcomes:

  • Scalable rendering performance to support growing project demands
  • Ability to burst capacity for peak workloads without permanent infrastructure expansion
  • Improved cash flow through an OpEx-based consumption model
  • Reduced upfront capital investment
  • More efficient alignment between infrastructure usage and cost
  • Flexibility at end of term to extend, refresh, or purchase infrastructure

By aligning infrastructure scalability with a flexible commercial model, Touchpoint enabled Fin Design to grow its capabilities while maintaining financial control—supporting both immediate delivery needs and long-term planning.
